Alluris is a wonderful dive into the RPG gaming world for lovers of fantasy and adventure from casual to pro alike.
The Game:
Alluris is a card based choose your own adventure out now for PC and mobile devices from developer 562 Interactive.
The land of Alluris is one of many people and fables. Magic is all around, monsters too, and tons of adventure is to be had. But, a darkness is rising. The Dread Baron has returned and is gathering his forces. Soon he shall sweep down upon the land. Will you be able to stop him? Will you care to even try? Good or evil, hero or villain, or simply ambivalent – the choice is yours.
Alluris is played in part by managing stats, like health, money, and reputations. You’ll also find yourself collecting items and powers that can be used in certain scenarios, like in battles and events. Then, you simply swipe left or right on the screen when a decision needs to be made. These decisions come in the form of cards. Cards in Alluris notate everything from characters you meet, places to go, and monsters to fight. Each card comes with two options to choose, left or right, and usually lead to different outcomes. It’s up to you to make a choice.
The Good:
Story, music, art, and choice all make Alluris rise above a plethora of similar games in the choose your own adventure sub-genre.
Starting with story, the best I can say is that it’s both directed through the threat of the Dread Baron, and open to explore as players choose their way across the world of Alluris. In our time playing we saw old gods in the sea, Faries in the forest, corrupt Sultans to overthrow, and so much more.
It was a true treat to simply choose a place to head out to and see what lay in wait. But remember, all the while, the Dread Baron is preparing to sweep down and bring ruin. Take too long in defeating him and you might find the lands overrun with powerful foes and your chances at victory slim.
Don’t worry though! Defeat is all part of the game. As you progress through the game you’ll find yourself unlocking achievements, new races to play, and even backgrounds to select. Upon death or victory, you’ll then be able to choose one of these new options and start the game all over with new modifiers and events based on who you are and where you come from.
For example, we started Alluris as a human male from a farming background. This is the base setup, with gender options of Female and Non-Binary being included as well. You get no bonuses, no negatives, and nothing major starting your play. When next we started the story we found Ratman, Faeries, and Elves were now unlocked. For backgrounds, we had found the Wizard path and the Barbarian start.
Finally, we touch on the music and art. In a text based game like this art and music is all the more important. Thankfully, Alluris nails it in this department. The artwork is sublime and fits perfectly the world of Alluris, and the music is soft and smooth when it needs to be, and spooky and dramatic when darkness calls. Really, the soundtrack and artwork of Alluris on it’s own would be well worth the price of admission.
The Mixed:
While Alluris does better than many other games in its genre, I often felt myself wishing for more variation on how games would start. After a few playthroughs, I found myself knowing what to expect in most given situations and simply swiping which way I knew would provide the best outcome.
This is not a problem that most casual gamers will find, but for those more intense in their play they’ll quickly run into this issue. But, it’s also a flaw that can be easily fixed. The game has not been out very long, and future story DLC and updates can go far in changing up the play even more.
The Bad:
Nothing to report! We really enjoyed Alluris, and anything that might be put here would be nothing more than nitpicking.
The Verdict:
Alluris is a great way to spend an afternoon, or to idle away time when on the go. The story is fun, the art is beautiful, and while we wanted more, there is enough variation in choices available that most players will find hours of fun through their many adventures.
At a low cost of only 8.49$ at 15% off, and 9.99$ once the sale ends on the 18th of October, Alluris is a great buy!
