What’s New With Destiny 2? Shadowkeep, New Light & Season of the Undying!

There are three big changes to Bungie’s Destiny 2 this October, and with just how much has changed, we here at Scuttle Gamez feel it’s important to cover what exactly is new and different in Destiny 2. First up, is the much anticipated Shadowkeep DLC.

Stay tuned for more articles, as a full review and more will be hitting Scuttle Gamez soon.

Shadowkeep

Shadowkeep will see player Guardians blasting off to the moon in search of answers to dark questions, and gearing up for war at the resurgence of the big baddies of the Destiny Universe – The Hive. The initial launch of the DLC saw the return of an old Destiny 1 favorite character, Eris Morn, as well as hints of stirring at what might just be the ultimate enemy for the Destiny series overall – THE DARKNESS.

Players jumping into the game now can expect new quests, zones, enemies, rare weapons, exotics, achievements, titles and collectables, alongside all the standard adornments of a Destiny DLC launch.

Armor 2.0 & New Light

Second, and probably even bigger than Shadowkeep overall, is Bungie’s push into the Free to Play market with their ‘New Light’ patch. New Light instantly makes all content up to the Forsaken DLC free to play, while locking certain leveling rewards and new content behind being an owner of a season pass.

Alongside this change came a variety of quality of life and game play updates. The armor modding and stat system is on such major change. In what Bungie is calling ‘Armor 2.0’ the entire way in which armor enhancements and mods are handled has been re-worked.

Previously, a player would obtain a piece of gear with set traits, with the option to slot a one time use mod into their gear, and the ability to masterwork said gear by spending a currency called enhancement cores.

With Armor 2.0, all armor comes with a series of stats to be viewed, such as intelligence and resilience akin to a more traditional RPG, and an Energy level. This energy level can be increased by spending resources on that piece of gear. The higher the energy available on an item, the more mods it can hold. And, best of all, mods are no longer single use items, but account unlockables that can be used as much as a player wants after having obtained said mod. Destiny 1 players will recognize this system as much of its core workings were pulled from that game.

Beyond gearing changes to the game, a ton of smaller updates have been made to everything from queuing up for certain activities, both in how to do so and in what can be done from orbit, and in how players can play through old game content. In the old days a new player to Destiny 2 would make a character, start at level 1, and immediately be thrown into the original Red War story campaign. Now, players are brought right to the main player HUB, the Traveler, and are boosted to a whopping power level of 750, the previous season’s maximum item level. From there, they can leap right into newer content if they wish, or head on over to NPC Amanda, at the Traveler, to start a story campaign of choice – pulling from all the previous free to play options available.

Season of the Undying

Finally, the last big update to Destiny 2 is the official start of the game’s newest season, the Season of the Undying – a Vex themed content patch set to run for the next 60 days.

Season of the Undying comes with new variants of Vex to fight, new activities, gear, story, and a cool new system of power available called Artifacts alongside a reworked leveling progression.

Leveling is similar to how it has always been, in how you gain experience and the like, but now instead of going toward a simple cosmetic engram every level, players gain levels linked to a specific season of play going up to level 100. Each level grants a set reward, and while most are just plain resources or upgrade parts, some include cool new cosmetics and even experience boosters.

This season’s artifact is the appropriately themed Gate Lord’s Eye. A player’s artifact gains power and levels alongside their season experience, but requires significantly less time to level. The artifact itself grants a small power boost as it gains strength, but most importantly is that it holds a series of unlock-able mods within it that are required for certain seasonal content.

Overall, there is a ton new in Destiny 2. We’ve stayed away from any kind of review here in this article to focus only on letting you know what there is to see with the updates, but worry not, a full DLC and Season review will be coming soon.
